You'll Get Out Of Your Head Easily With Mindfulness

Mindfulness is utilized as a counseling and psychotherapy tool. It is usually characterized by meditation and relaxation techniques. Jon Kabat-Zinn influenced adoption of this practice, by starting Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Comparable programs like Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) deal with anxiety and depression, boosting mental health. Mindfulness is also employed by businesses and schools to manage stress and generate creativity.

The goal is to become more self-aware. However, this secular mindfulness encourages you to pay attention only to yourself. This contradicts Scripture’s teaching to have the mind of Christ and evaluate everything in light of our relationship with Him. So, Christians use mindfulness as a tool in a Christ-integrated way.

Meditation exists in Scripture in the context of spending time studying the Word of God.  " When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches." - Psalm 63:6

Mindfulness is the skill of deliberately focusing your attention on the present. This concept is about becoming more self-aware. You do not allow yourself to be distracted by all those thoughts constantly running through your head. You clear the noise from your mind. You only pay attention to the feelings, sensations, and thoughts in that moment, without becoming overwhelmed or overly reactive.

There is strong support within the Judeo-Christian tradition and the pages of Scripture for the practice of meditation in general:

  • Prayer is how Christians apply mindfulness to daily living. "Pray without ceasing." - 1 Thessalonians 5:17
  • Scripture instructs us to take our thoughts captive. "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." - 2 Corinthians 10:5
  • We should look to Jesus and contemplate joy. "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." - Hebrews 12:2
  • Christians should not let themselves be distracted by worries. "25Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." - Matthew 6:25-34
  • The apostle Paul tells Christians to be mindful and live with the awareness of the present. "1If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 2:1-5
  • We should concentrate on Jesus and think about true things. "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." - Philippians 4:8
  • Paul tells us to practice God-honoring thoughts. "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:9
  • Meditation occurs in the Bible in the framework of learning the Word of God. "We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple." - Psalm 48:9
  • Paul tells us to transform by renewing our minds. "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." - Romans 12:2

Be Mindful

>Being mindful lets, you see what is already great about you and your life. >Being mindful lets you free yourself from things that hold you back.

For instance, being mindful can help you recognize that just because your journey of eating healthy did not end well in the past, it does not mean that is your life now. You can free yourself from the limiting thoughts of what used to be.

Being mindful can help you stop projecting your life on the foundation of what-if, which occurs when women look ahead. Tomorrow is not here yet. All we have is now.

Living in the present opens your life up to the opportunities in front of you rather than looking back at past mistakes or ahead to what may or may not ever happen. Mindfulness lets you be fully present in this moment.

It allows you to tune in to yourself so that you are aware of the experience before you. You will be more open to your emotions without judgment. This helps you work on anything you want as part of your self-improvement journey without beating yourself up for the advances you think you "should" have made. Instead, you will be able to praise yourself for what you have accomplished.

Women must prayerfully decide whether to engage in mindfulness and meditating on God’s Word as a spiritual discipline or incorporate it into a Life Coaching plan.
