Embrace the Great Commission – Share the Gospel with People

spirituality Nov 24, 2024

The Great Commission is the final command Jesus gave to His disciples before ascending to heaven. In Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV), He said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” As followers of Christ, we are each responsible for sharing the gospel with others, leading people to salvation, and making disciples.

Embracing your role in the Great Commission is not just for pastors or missionaries. It is a call for every believer to participate in advancing God's Kingdom. Whether you are sharing your faith with a friend, serving in your local church, or supporting global missions, you are actively spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. This week, we will explore what it means to embrace your role in the Great Commission and how you can confidently share the gospel with others.

Why Sharing the Gospel Matters

The Great Commission is not a suggestion; it is a command. Jesus' words, “Go ye therefore,” leave no room for passivity. As believers, we have been entrusted with the message of salvation—the greatest news the world has ever known. Romans 10:14 (KJV) asks, “How then shall they call on him whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” Sharing the gospel matters because it is through hearing the Word that people come to faith in Christ.

When we share the gospel, we are not just inviting people into a better way of life but pointing them toward eternal life. Jesus said in John 14:6 (KJV), “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” There is no greater love than leading someone to Christ's saving knowledge. By embracing your role in the Great Commission, you are fulfilling God's purpose for your life and impacting others for eternity.

How to Embrace Your Role in the Great Commission

  1. Pray for Opportunities to Share
One of the first steps in embracing your role in the Great Commission is to pray. Ask God to open doors for you to share the gospel with others. Colossians 4:3 (KJV) says, “Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ.” When you pray for opportunities, God will provide them.
Application: Begin your day with a prayer, asking God to allow you to share His love with someone. Be attentive to the conversations and interactions He brings your way.

  2. Know and Share the Gospel Message
To effectively share the gospel, it is essential to understand the core message: that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again, offering salvation to all who believe (1 Corinthians 15:3-4 KJV). You do not need to be a theologian to share the gospel. Simply sharing your testimony or explaining what Jesus has done in your life can be a powerful witness.
Application: Prepare a simple way to explain the gospel to someone. Focus on God's love, our need for salvation, and the gift of grace through faith in Jesus.

  3. Overcome Fear and Doubt
Many people hesitate to share their faith because of fear—fear of rejection, fear of not having all the answers or fear of offending someone. But Jesus promised in Matthew 28:20 (KJV), “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” You are not alone when you share the gospel; Christ empowers you through the Holy Spirit.
Application: When fear or doubt arises, remind yourself of God’s promise to be with you. Trust that He will guide your words and open the hearts of those you speak to.

  4. Build Relationships and Serve
Sharing the gospel is not always about a one-time conversation. Often, it involves building relationships and serving others. When people see the love of Christ in your actions, they become more open to hearing about your faith. In Matthew 5:16 (KJV), Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Application: Look for ways to serve others in your community, neighborhood, or workplace. As you build trust and show genuine care, opportunities to share the gospel will naturally arise.

  5. Trust the Results to God
It is important to remember that your role is to share the message, but the results are in God’s hands. 1 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV) says, “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” You may not always see immediate results but trust that God is working in the hearts of those you speak to.
Application: Do not be discouraged if someone does not respond right away. Trust that God is at work, and faithfully share His love.

Action Steps for You

  1. Pray for Boldness: This week, ask God to give you boldness in sharing the gospel. Pray for specific people who need to hear the good news and ask God to prepare their hearts for the message.

  2. Prepare Your Testimony: Write down your testimony of how you came to know Christ. Practice sharing it with a friend or family member so you can share when an opportunity arises.

  3. Look for Opportunities: This week, be intentional about looking for opportunities to share the gospel. Be open to the Spirit's leading, Whether with a coworker, neighbor, or family member.

  4. Serve with Purpose: Find a way to serve someone this week to express Christ’s love. Let your actions open the door for conversations about your faith.
