Many people reflect on their relationships on Valentine's Day, celebrating love and companionship. For Christian women, it is a perfect opportunity to evaluate our relationships and ensure that they are Christ-centered, reflecting the love of God in every interaction.
Relationships are a gift from God, whether romantic, familial, friendships or even professional connections. These relationships will help us grow in faith, love, and our walk with Christ. On Valentine’s Day, we often focus on romantic love, but this is also a day to nurture our relationships by aligning them with the biblical principles of love, kindness, and grace.
In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (KJV), we find one of the most famous definitions of love:
"Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things."
Whether it’s your spouse, children, parents, or friends, this passage reminds us that love is an action. It is a choice to be patient, kind, and selfless and to rejoice in the truth of Christ. In the rush of daily life, it's easy to overlook these traits, but Valentine’s Day offers an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to loving others with the same unconditional love God shows us.
Reflecting Christ’s Love in Marriage
Valentine’s Day can sometimes come with expectations of grand gestures for those married or in a relationship, but the real gift is a relationship rooted in Christ. Ephesians 5:25 reminds us of the sacredness of marriage, saying,
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it."
This is a profound call for sacrificial love, a love that mirrors Christ’s relationship with the Church. Whether celebrating with a special dinner or a quiet evening at home, let your relationship be marked by grace, forgiveness, and a shared commitment to growing together in Christ.
Building Strong Connections
Valentine’s Day does not have to be limited to romantic relationships. It’s also a great time to appreciate our friendships and family relationships. Proverbs 17:17 tells us,
"A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."
True friends are a gift from God, who walks us through good times and bad. This Valentine’s Day, take a moment to reach out to the people who have been a source of strength and encouragement in your life. A kind word, a thoughtful message, or a small act of love can go a long way in nurturing these important relationships.
Loving Others with the Love of Christ
The ultimate example of love is in Jesus Christ. His love for us is sacrificial, steadfast, and unconditional. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, let’s strive to show the love of Christ to everyone in our lives. Whether through an act of service, a kind word, or simply spending time with someone, we can reflect God’s love in a tangible way.
Zig Ziglar once said, "You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want." This Valentine’s Day, let that principle guide how we show love to others. It’s not about grand gestures or expensive gifts but about helping others feel valued, cherished, and supported in their journey.
Pursue Christ-Centered Love
Let’s commit to deepening our relationships this Valentine's Day by making Christ the center of them. Whether with a spouse, friend, family member, or co-worker, we can spread God's love to those around us. As you celebrate, remember to love as Christ has loved you — with patience, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to truth.
By pursuing Christ-centered love, we build stronger relationships and grow in our faith, knowing that every act of love brings us closer to Him.
