Love in Action – What It Means to Love Like Christ

spirituality Aug 18, 2024

Christian women are called to love as Christ loves—a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional love that extends beyond emotions and manifests itself in action. Jesus gave us the perfect example of love in action throughout His life and ministry. In John 13:34-35 (KJV), Jesus said, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” Loving like Christ is not merely a suggestion but a commandment that defines us as His followers.

But what does it truly mean to love like Christ? It means putting others before ourselves, serving humbly, and offering grace and forgiveness even when difficult. Love is not passive; it requires intentionality and effort. Jesus demonstrated this love by healing the sick, comforting the brokenhearted, and ultimately laying down His life for us. His love was active, compassionate, and transformative. This blog post will explore what it means to put love into action and how we can reflect Christ’s love to those around us.

Why Love in Action Matters:

Love is at the heart of the Gospel. It is the greatest commandment Jesus gave us and the foundation of our faith. In Matthew 22:37-39 (KJV), Jesus said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” Loving God and others is central to our spiritual lives, but love cannot remain just a feeling or good intention—it must be shown through our actions.

Love in action means caring for others with empathy, meeting their needs, and showing kindness, patience, and forgiveness. Through these acts of love, others can see Christ's love in us. When we choose to love as Christ loved, we embody the Gospel and bring His light into the world.

How to Love Like Christ:

  1. Serve Others with Humility: Jesus was the ultimate example of servant leadership. In John 13:14-15 (KJV), He washed His disciples' feet and said, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.” Serving others with humility means putting their needs before our own and being willing to do even the most humble acts of service. Whether helping a friend, volunteering in the community, or offering a kind word, loving like Christ means serving others without expecting anything in return.
  2. Offer Grace and Forgiveness: Loving like Christ means extending grace and forgiveness, even when difficult. In Colossians 3:13 (KJV), we are told, “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” Just as Christ has forgiven us, we are called to forgive others. This act of love can bring healing to relationships and reflects the heart of God.
  3. Sacrifice for the Benefit of Others: True love often requires sacrifice. Jesus showed the ultimate act of love when He laid down His life for us. John 15:13 (KJV) says, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” While we may not be called to give our lives physically, we are called to make sacrifices for the well-being of others. This could be giving our time, resources, or energy to help someone in need or setting aside our desires to support a loved one.
  4. Show Kindness and Compassion: Jesus was always moved with compassion for those who were suffering. In Matthew 9:36 (KJV), we read, “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.” We are called to have that same heart of compassion for others. When we see someone hurting, we should respond with kindness and care, doing what we can to help.
  5. Love Without Condition: Christ’s love is unconditional—He loves us despite our flaws and failures. Romans 5:8 (KJV) reminds us, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Loving like Christ means loving others without condition, not based on what they do or how they treat us, but simply because they are made in the image of God.

Action Steps for You:

  1. Look for Ways to Serve Someone in Need: This week, intentionally seek out someone who could use your help or encouragement. Whether it is a family member, friend, or stranger, find a way to serve them with humility and love.
  2. Practice Forgiveness: Is there someone you need to forgive? Pray for the strength to offer forgiveness as Christ forgave you and take steps to reconcile any broken relationships.
  3. Show Kindness to a Stranger: Take a moment to extend kindness to someone you do not know—whether offering a smile, a word of encouragement, or a small act of service. These acts of love can have a powerful impact.
  4. Sacrifice for the Sake of Others: Consider what you can sacrifice this week to benefit someone else. It could be your time, energy, or resources, but whatever it is, do it with love and a willing heart.
