Poison Prevention Week: Valuable For Health Of The Christian Women

health Mar 17, 2025

As Christian women, we are called to care for our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, KJV), and part of that stewardship includes ensuring our homes and families are protected from harm. One important health focus in March is National Poison Prevention Week, which takes place from March 16-22. This is a reminder to take proactive steps in preventing accidental poisonings in our households and communities.

What is National Poison Prevention Week?

National Poison Prevention Week serves as an annual opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them. Whether it’s household cleaning products, medications, or even certain foods, accidental poisoning can occur more easily than we might think. By being mindful and taking precautions, we can keep ourselves, our families, and others safe.

Why Poison Prevention is Important

Accidental poisonings are more common than we might realize, and they can be fatal. Common sources of poisoning include:

  • Household chemicals such as bleach, detergents, or disinfectants.
  • Medications that are not properly stored or administered.
  • Plants or foods that can be toxic if consumed incorrectly.

For Christian women who manage households, care for children, or work with vulnerable populations, it’s important to take action. Proverbs 31:27 (KJV) speaks of the virtuous woman who “looketh well to the ways of her household,” and taking steps to prevent poisoning is part of looking after the health and well-being of those around us.

Practical Steps for Poison Prevention

Here are some practical ways to safeguard your home:

  1. Properly store all chemicals and medications: Keep them out of reach of children and in their original containers with labels intact.
  2. Install childproof locks on cabinets containing dangerous substances, especially if you have young children in the home.
  3. Be mindful of food safety: Certain foods can be toxic if consumed incorrectly (like undercooked meats or improperly stored perishables).
  4. Keep the Poison Control Center contact information handy: Call 1-800-222-1222 in the event of an accidental poisoning.

A Biblical Reminder

In Proverbs 4:7 (KJV), we are told, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Wisdom, in this context, means being aware of the dangers around us and taking preventive action to avoid unnecessary harm. As women of faith, we are responsible for using the wisdom God has given us to protect our health and the health of others.

Additional Resources

During this National Poison Prevention Week, I encourage you to take time to learn more about poison prevention and share this knowledge with your family and friends. Many resources are available through health organizations that provide valuable information on how to protect your home and community.

Let’s work together to honor God by caring for our bodies and those He has entrusted into our care, living out our faith through wisdom, protection, and love. 🌿
